Matching pending movements
Merchant identity or normalized description, with incoming and outgoing movements kept apart.
FOR U.S. SOLE PROPRIETORS AND SINGLE-MEMBER LLCs FILING SCHEDULE C
The Three-Button Method groups matching expenses across bank accounts: Import, Categorize, Export, Deliver.
THE REAL BOTTLENECK
Your spreadsheet, template, or accounting software may already hold every row. The repetitive work begins when the same merchant appears again and each matching movement asks for another Business, Personal, or category decision.
“Pasting my bank statement into Excel and annotating it with categories—it is surprisingly painful.”
The shortcut applies only when the rows really belong together. When they do not, you can open the group and decide each row separately.
THE THREE-BUTTON METHOD
The method does not remove your judgment. It changes where you use it—and preserves the exceptions instead of hiding them.
Load supported CSV, Excel, QFX, QBO, OFX, or eligible text-based PDF files from the accounts you choose.
Pending rows recognized as the same merchant—or the same normalized description—are brought together. Money in and money out remain separate.
A recognized merchant can carry a suggested Schedule C category. You confirm it or change it before choosing Business.
Choose Business, Personal, or Later. The selected status and category are written to every row in that group.
Open the group and decide the rows one by one when the same merchant contains different uses.
Create one .xlsx with Transactions, Summary, and Open Items.
Send the workbook, source records, and clearly identified questions to your tax preparer for review.
GROUP + APPLY
This shows the verified product logic without inventing a merchant, amount, or transaction count.
Merchant identity or normalized description, with incoming and outgoing movements kept apart.
The card uses the real row count and combines the group amount and date range.
You choose the status and, for Business, confirm or change the category.
Original date, description, amount, account, and merchant data remain attached.
The account is preserved on every row, but it is not used to split otherwise matching merchant rows.
Limit: a group can include different accounts; that does not mean every group will.
Positive and negative movements do not share a group merely because the merchant name matches.
Limit: direction does not prove that every row has the same business purpose.
Apply updates status and category across the selected group without rewriting the source fields.
Limit: the app records your decision; it does not certify it.
EXCEPTION HANDLING
When matching rows do not share the same use, choose the one-by-one path. Each movement remains connected to its original description, account, date, and amount.
Use individual review when the rows should not receive one shared decision.
A merchant suggestion remains editable before a Business decision is applied.
Later keeps the movement open and carries it into Open Items for checking or discussion.
THE EXPORTED WORKBOOK
The export creates three worksheets. Each one has a different job.
Original fields remain connected to the status and category recorded by the user.
Summary totals the imported amounts recorded as Business. It is not tax preparation, a filing, or a fiscal adjustment.
Pending, Later, and Needs Review items remain separate instead of being disguised as finished work.
The workbook gives your preparer organized transactions, category totals, and a separate list of unresolved items. Your preparer may still request changes, supporting documents, or a different format.
FIT
CONTROL OF THE RECORDS
You select the files you want to import. The app processes them in the browser and stores the working record in that browser.
Date, statement description, amount, and account stay attached to the decision.
Export after meaningful sessions and before clearing browser data or moving to another device.
Scanned and photographed statements are not interpreted through OCR.
WHAT IS INCLUDED
Each part supports the same path: import the records, make the decisions, export the workbook, and prepare the handoff.
Import supported transaction files, review matching groups, choose Business, Personal, or Later, and export the three-sheet workbook.
Use fictional records to learn the workflow before opening your own financial files.

The click-by-click path from opening the app to the first export.

A working order for completing a finite record-organizing project.

Plain-English category guidance to use while making your own decisions.

Prepared messages for the points where records or the final handoff can stall.

Open the group and decide the movements one by one. The product makes that exception path available; it does not automatically detect mixed use.
Yes, when the merchant or normalized description and the movement direction match. The account remains attached to every row. Not every group will include more than one account.
The movement stays in the record, remains open, and appears in Open Items for checking or discussion. Later does not resolve it automatically.

THE NEXT DECISION
Import supported files, review matching groups, choose Business, Personal, or Later, and export the workbook for tax-preparer review.
Digital, self-guided product. Not bookkeeping, accounting, legal, or tax services. Results depend on the completeness of the imported records and the decisions provided by the user.
WHO'S BEHIND CLARITYPLANO
I'm Carmine, and I built ClarityPlano. Sorting my own statements meant answering for the same coffee shop and the same subscription over and over. The work wasn't hard, just slow, and the repeats are what made me stop.
So The Three-Button Method groups matching charges: one decision covers every charge from that merchant. When one merchant is both business and personal, you review those separately. Not sure on a charge? NEEDS REVIEW is a real answer.
It doesn't judge what's deductible and it doesn't file your taxes. It turns scattered statements into one spreadsheet you check, then keep or hand off.
